I also disassembled the bolt and scrubbed the charcoal coating out of it using a brass brush and CLP. The bore is now bright and shiny and still has strong rifling. I wrapped a few strands around a brass bore brush, coated it with "J-B Bore Bright" and proceeded to mine greenish-black copper oxide ore from the bore. I tried something different to clean what may have been 80-year-old copper fouling and other crap out of the bore - something called (I'm not making this up) "Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner" (more on this here. I cleaned the Mauser up a bit last night. We all really enjoy shooting military surplus rifles and handguns. He really likes shooting my SKS but doesn't like shooting the M-N all that much. soaking wet and I was looking for something with a bit more manageable recoil. I bought my eldest son a Mosin–Nagant 91/30 (right at $100 at the time, including tax) and the recoil is punishing although he still really likes it for its Russian Revolution looks.

Anyone have experience shooting one? Anything in particular to watch out for? I have heard that they are softer shooting than 8mm Mausers and the prices still seem somewhat reasonable compared to other military surplus rifles. The Mauser appears to be in much better shape than the Spanish Mausers I have seen up on J&G's website for only a bit more. I also bought his older brother a milsurp bolt action for Christmas after his 18th birthday 5 years ago. I have an opportunity to buy a 7x57 1916 Spanish Mauser out of a collection as a Christmas present for my son.
